Eagles Cut Trent Edwards

The Eagles cut QB Trent Edwards today.

That move makes total sense.  Edwards was a good fit for the WCO, but Chip Kelly wants to do things differently.  Edwards had basically no shot at making the team so letting him go now was the prudent move.

The Eagles have Mike Vick, Nick Foles, Dennis Dixon, and G.J. Kinne currently on the roster.  The team will either draft a QB or add a UDFA to the mix.

Right now there are 74 players on the roster.  The team has 9 draft picks.  That leaves room for 7 UDFAs.  Don’t be surprised if there are a couple of more cuts after this week’s mini-camp.

Any speculation on the timing of this move? Seems like they could have cut Edwards months ago. Do you think they were possibly working on trying to get a trade to happen and it fell through? Not that I think we were likely to get anything for him anyway, and I fully agree, it is not as if he had any chance of making the team. The timing just seems… random.

Maybe they did this in case any of the other QBs got hurt at the last minute.

That would make sense. And for a guy like Edwards, it is not as if getting cut earlier would have improved his chances of getting a job. I don’t think being available at the beginning of FA would have made much of a difference. He is likely not going to be signed until after the draft regardless, when teams are trying to fill up their rosters and looking for the best competition for their last roster spots. In other words, while it was a late cut, it wasn’t a disservice to Edwards.
