Eagles Mock

I did a mock draft for my PE.com column this week. No trades.

It is really hard to be comfortable with a mock if the Eagles don’t have extra picks. It would be okay if you didn’t have to mix in a QB, but with that “need” you eat up a valuable resource.

This wasn’t intended to be my ideal draft, but rather just a look at one possible scenario.

Every mock I have seen you do has included a QB. I agree it is a definite need, but as you have said, we may not be able to address every need. Is it possible that backup QB is one of the needs we pass on?

Given that between Foles and Vick we’ve pretty much got backup QB locked down, that makes a lot of sense. Only way I see them draft someone is if they think he’s got a legitimate shot at developing into a starter.

A lot of people think you should draft a QB every year. Most will fail, but if you hit on one, can be huge.

I’d prefer to wait til the 4th or 5th to take a QB.

I definitely buy the logic of drafting a QB every year. It’s the most important position on the team and you want to maximize the chance of finding one. I guess to me though, hoping you’re going to hit on a QB late is sort of a luxury move. When you are a playoff contender, you have only minor holes that you are trying to fill. In the later rounds, you are building for depth and the future, so you can afford to take a bit of a gamble on a QB. For us though, as you pointed out, we will have a hard, if not impossible, time trying to fill all the holes we have on the team, so taking a QB (unless of course you trust he is the BPA which is not usually going to be the case because QBs are so often drafted early because teams don’t want to miss drafting their guy), seems like a bit of a luxury pick that we may not be able to afford.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Eagles will not take an OL unless the are scared about Peters. If they take an OL and Peters is healthy, that means they spent a #4 overall on improving their guard play. I just think they can spend that better elsewhere.

Why do you think it’s necessary to include a QB? If there is no one compelling, why not just give Foles a chance (assuming he can beat out Vick)? If he doesn’t work out, then they will have done a better job of filling out their team (hopefully) this year and then next year (seemingly a stronger QB class) they can do what it takes to get a young QB to fit in with the other talent. Taking a QB just to take one sounds like J Jarrett all over again (except, you know, at S).

I really like that draft. I would just substitute Darius Slay for Zac Dysert and we’re good to go.

I just don’t think TE is a pressing enough need to burn the 2nd round pick on that position, especially when it results in not taking a CB til the 7th rd.
