Spam

A few of you have noticed a lot of spam in the comments recently. One of the problems with a successful blog is that you have to deal with spam.

I spend about 5 minutes a day deleting bogus comments. I’ve resisted putting in Disqus because I know not everyone is a fan of it. I might have to go to that. The spam filters on Word Press pickup 75 percent of the comments. You guys just see the tip of the iceberg.

Any other suggestions?

I’ve personally got nothing against Disquis, so that would’ve my suggestion. The spam is bad enough that I’ve pretty much stopped clicking on the comments links at all.

Just the other day I saw a post wih 13 comments and thought, “13? There must be at least one non-spam post in there. I should read it.”

    Nope!

I complained about Disqus when you first implemented it on IgglesBlitz, but now that I’m used to it, I think it’s a pretty good system. And everyone that posts on IgglesBlitz already has it so it would probably increase commenting here.

I’ve found the best way to cut down on the random promo spam is to use Geo identification of users at the web server level and just block China, Taiwan, and Russia completely. But you probably don’t have the necessary access to the web server to implement something like this. And of course that could cut out some overseas Eagles fans anyway.

I too enjoy the freedom of being able to post without registering with some website. But like BC said, your audience here is probably largely similar to your audience on IgglesBlitz, so those who comment on articles are likely already registered anyway.

And I also find the spam posts annoying. It’s a shame.

I’d be fine with Disqus. I like that I can just sign in with my Twitter account and not have to worry about registering with a whole new service.

There are things I don’t like about Disqus but I am not sure there is anything better out there.

You could have Eggs, Bacon, and Spam. That doesn’t have much Spam in it.
