Free Agency Timeline

The official NFL schedule says free agency begins in early March. Agent Jack Bechta wrote a piece for the National Football Post detailing how things work behind the scenes. Check out what is going on at this point.

The Senior Bowl (Jan. 20 to 26): Agents attended the Senior Bowl from Sunday through Thursday. There, agents, coaches, GMs and personnel directors initiate free agent chatter. For example, I had a list of my free agents on a legal pad. I would show it to as many decision makers as possible and ask which players they might have an interest in. Prior to Senior Bowl week my staff and I also broke down team needs and had a short list of which teams may be the best matches for a particular free agent client. During these quick informal conversations, numbers are usually not discussed but the “level” of interest is. For a number of teams, they may not have had any personnel meetings so they may not even be sure yet who they are targeting.

Between January 26th and February 18th: Most agents representing free agents will be burning up the phone lines talking to teams about what positions they will be targeting. However, if the free agent is the top rated at his position, the agent can wait for the call and market to come to him.

Signing may start in March, but a lot of important conversations are already taking place.

Fans Who Suffer

Sports on Earth posted a column that ranked NFL fanbases by which ones “are the most tortured”. The Eagles came in 5th.

5. Philadelphia Eagles. (Super Bowl appearances: 2. Super Bowl wins: 0.) Every team’s fans want a championship, but I think you can make an argument that no team’s fans want a championship morethan Eagles’ fans. It’s not particularly healthy, all told, and I’m not sure they deserve one as much as some others, but the coach and quarterback who bring a title to Philadelphia will be lionized. And then of course hit with something. But lionized first.

Ahead of them are the Big 4: Minnesota, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo. It is hard to argue with the Bills being #1.

1. Buffalo Bills. (Super Bowl appearances: 4. Super Bowl wins: None.) The Bills hit the trifecta of pain. They:

a: Have not made the playoffs since 1999, the longest drought in the NFL. (This game also happens to have been lost in the most ridiculous fashion imaginable.) b: Have made it to the Super Bowl four times without ever winning it. c: Lost those four games right in a row, with an amazing collection of talent few teams in the NFL have assembled in succession since.

In addition to this, the Bills play one game every season in Toronto, live in a city that’s constantly battling economic woes and are perpetually in danger of being moved to Los Angeles. If that ever happened, if the Bills ever moved, they better win a Super Bowl first. Because no fan base deserves one, and has earned one, more.

No playoffs since 1999? Inconceivable.

Potential Eagles Target

Here is Virginia DL Brent Urban. The Eagles talked to him at the Senior Bowl. He is 6-7, 298 and has long arms. Sound like a Chip Kelly guy to you? UVA used him as a DT, where he wasn’t a natural fit. Urban is meant to be a 3-4 DE. This is an impressive showing, but understand that he’s not some dominant player. Urban isn’t a 1st round type. Could go 2nd, 3rd or 4th. We’ll see.

Former Eagle Update

David Alexander was a good Center for the Eagles during the Buddy Ryan years. Underrated player who did his best to keep those OLs together, despite a constantly changing lineup.

Alexander just got named the head coach at a high school in Oklahoma. It got mentioned on Twitter and Rich Hoffman responded with a quick, funny story.

That’s classic Buddy.
