McNabb in the Playoffs

Chase Stuart put together some interesting numbers to compare playoff QBs.

How weird is it that McNabb only won 2 fewer playoff games than Troy Aikman? And he’s got more wins than Dan Marino? He’s tied with Peyton Manning heading into today’s game.

Fun With Comparitive Stats

If you don’t follow Sir Broosk on Twitter, do yourself a favor and start now. He is the funniest guy on Twitter. Possibly insane, but brilliantly funny.

Youth Movement

That tweet prompted this response from ILB Emmanuel Acho.

Some will point out that guys like Peters, Mathis, Herremans, Cole and Ryans are older players. That’s certainly true, but there is a lot of young talent on the roster. It isn’t like the Eagles have 5 older stars and 40 young scrubs.

Cary Williams Costly Mistake

Cary Williams made a horse collar tackle on the final kickoff that set the Saints up in great field position. That really hurt last week.

It is hurting Williams again this week. He was fined $15,750 for the tackle. Cary was paid $23,000 for the game so he’s losing the vast majority of his game check.

Ouch.

Don’t Say A Word

The Patriots always seem to have a ton of injuries, and often to key players. This year’s team is missing Gronk, Sebastian Vollmer, Vince Wilfork, Jerrod Mayo, Brandon Spikes and Tommy Kelly. That’s a lot of firepower, on offense and defense.

A Pats writer is pushing the idea that Bill Belichick needs to call Chip Kelly and pick his brain. They learned from each other in the past. Kelly has done an amazing job with keeping the Eagles healthy this year. Why wouldn’t Bill try to find out what he’s doing?

Bill can ask, but Chip should politely decline to answer. They exchanged info when Chip was at Oregon. There was no conflict of interest. Lots of college and pro coaches help each other. No NFL coaches help each other. Their competitors.

Coaches may share a secret or two, but that is generally something the other guy can pick up off tape study. Kelly has been very protective of the sport science stuff. I hope he remains tight-lipped to other teams and doesn’t share any info. The Eagles seem to have a leg up in this area. Let’s hope they keep that.

Vulnerable to Weakness

Here is an interesting column by Oregon fan and Chip Kelly expert Mark Saltveit on a problem the Eagles had down the stretch.

The Eagles have a weird paradox — they do well against direct challenges and opponents’ strengths, but show surprising weakness toward their opponents’ soft spots and injury-riddled positions.  New Orleans beat Philadelphia with an unheralded running attack, depleted by an injury to top RB Pierre Thomas.

Philadelphia’s previous loss was to Minnesota — after their two best runners went out with injuries and QB Matt Cassell beat the Birds with his rarely-lauded arm.  The Eagles hung on to beat Dallas in the year’s final game, but backup quarterback Kyle Orton and Dallas’ woeful defense pushed them to the limit.

I’m dwelling on this a bit because it’s a fascinating paradox that may illustrate the limits and potential of this team.  DC Billy Davis has overachieved by anyone’s standards, especially working against the pass with a much-maligned secondary.

My best explanation for this vulnerability to weakness is that Davis has done a great job of scheming against opponents — too great a job.  He figured out how to manipulate all of the limited resources at his disposal and stop the league’s top passing combos — but in doing so, he left himself open to counterattacks that have been very effective.

The lack of overall talent on the defense caught up to the Eagles as teams would adjust to what the Eagles did. Gameplans only get you so far. At a certain point, you must win the battles and out-execute them. That didn’t happen in some key games.

Salary Cap Update

That’s enough money to do some shopping, but the Eagles won’t go wild. They’ve got some guys to re-sign.

I almost can’t wait for him to make the full time move to broadcasting. I hope he gets the right format so he can use his sense of humor and creativity.

Say It Ain’t So

Philadelphia director of player personnel Tom Gamble is the top candidate to replace former Miami General Manager Jeff Ireland, a source said Tuesday night. Gamble quickly emerged as the man owner Stephen Ross wants to get to run the organization after the team’s latest shakeup.

Let’s hope Tom decides to stay in Philly. He’s got ties to the area and organization. That could be enough to keep him around even though he works for Howie and isn’t the actual GM. Stay tuned.
