What do the Packers coaches think of the Eagles?

“If you look at the game Sunday,” the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator said, “he (Foles) threw the deep ball as well as anybody I’ve seen. He was right on the money on all those deep balls….It was kind of a clinic.”

And

“They play fast. I’m a believer in that,” McCarthy said this week. “They challenge your defense from the ability to match up to the ability to substitute. And they have good players. You can see they’re getting better each week. Quarterback is red hot. He’s making all the throws. And (LeSeanMcCoy is running the ball extremely well.”

And

“They try to confuse you with their tempo, with their speed,” cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. said. “Their quarterback is good. He can get the ball out of his hand quick. He can throw it deep. Whatever he needs to do. At receiver, they have speed guys and possession guys. And they have a very, very good back.”

Ranking LeSean & DeSean

The Eagles have a pair of major stars in LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson. Just how good are they?

DeSean is 4th in the NFL in “clutch receptions”. These are catches that go for a 1st down or a TD.

NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling, an excellent analyst and writer, rated LeSean in the top tier of NFL RBs.

Top shelf: Adrian PetersonJamaal Charles,LeSean McCoyMarshawn Lynch

Peterson runs with a violence and explosive slashing ability that other backs simply can’t match. His effort is on another level. It’s an upset when one tackler brings him down. Don’t be surprised if he breaks the 200-yard barrier against the Redskins on Thursday night. … Charles has been the most valuable non-quarterback in the league this season, leading the Chiefs in rushing yards, receiving yards and receptions as a lights-out fourth-quarter closer.

Rivaling Peterson as the most fun back to watch, McCoy is the NFL’s leading rusher through nine weeks. … Lynch is carrying the Seahawks‘ offense while Russell Wilson works to overcome an outbreak of injuries on the offensive line.

Nothing groundbreaking, but it is always interesting to see what the national perception of Eagles players is.

Fear the Beard

Dave Spadaro did a good interview with Bennie Logan. The best part:

DS: What are you weighing right now?

BL: 305…but if you add my beard I’m 310.

Bennie seems like a real likeable guy. He played well on Sunday and that’s the most important thing. Let’s hope he keeps it up. Would be great to have him be the long term answer at NT.

Cosell on Foles

Tim McManus spoke to Greg Cosell of NFL Films to find out his thoughts on QB Nick Foles. Cosell offered his take on the blowout of the Raiders.

“There are two elements to this,” said Cosell of the Eagles’ 49-20 romp in Oakland. “One, they played at the fastest tempo they have played all season. Two, the Raiders for some reason did not understand what the Eagles offense was about.”

There is no question that the Raiders defense played poorly. You just wonder how much of that is on them for having a bad day and how much is the Eagles getting them into that situation and then taking advantage of it.  This was the 9th game of the season. The Raiders had plenty of tape to study.

Any conclusions on Foles so far?

Cosell has seen more positives than negatives overall in Foles, but isn’t prepared to call it one way or another. As far as he is concerned, only half the evidence is in.

“It’s about consistency of execution,” he said.

I completely agree. We need to see how Foles plays over the course of several consecutive games to know what he really is.

Good stuff from McManus and Cosell.

Casey’s Brother Update

Apparently Casey Matthews has a brother who plays for the Packers. I’ve never heard of him so he must not be any good. Here’s an update on his playing status for Sunday.

Red Zone Success

Let’s look at Nick’s games.

vs DEN – 1 for 1 in late mop-up duty

vs NYG – 1 for 2…played just over half the game

vs TB – 2 for 3

vs DAL – 0 for 1

vs OAK – 4 for 4

Overall, 8 for 11. Take away the Denver TD since that was at the end of a blowout. You still have 7 for 10, or 70 percent. That’s great.

For the season, the Eagles are at 48.15 percent, which ranks them 26th in the league. They were 31st prior to Sunday. Foles is making a difference in the Red Zone. That’s a big argument for him staying the QB.
