Irony Can Be Pretty Ironic

I just posted an update to the Eagles practice squad. And then a couple of readers pointed me to this note from Adam Caplan.

I was using PE.com as the source for the practice squad info and hadn’t seen Caplan’s note.

Practice Squad Update

The Eagles have made some changes to the practice squad so let’s take an updated look.

WR Will Murphy
TE Emil Igwenagu
QB G.J. Kinne
OT Michael Bamiro

DE Brandon Bair
OLB Travis Long
S Keelan Johnson
* CB Marcus Burley

This group is a mixture of practice players and developmental players.

Murphy is a practice player. He’s got limited upside, but played for Kelly at Oregon and will go out every day in practice.

Igwenagu spent time on the roster this year. He is a FB/TE tweener that could make the roster in the future or replace one of the TEs on the roster if there is an injury.

Kinne was added when Nick Foles got hurt. It will be interesting to see if Kinne sticks around for more than a few weeks.

Bamiro has good potential and should push for a roster spot next year. The question is whether he can ever become a starting OT.

Bair is a practice player. He’s 28 years old. That’s not a guy you’re developing for the future. He played for Kelly at Oregon. If there was an injury, Bair could join the active roster.

Long could be a player in the future. He was limited this summer, but that’s because he wasn’t 100 percent healthy. Long probably is a backup OLB, but it will be interesting to see how well he plays next summer when he is all the way back from his injury.

Johnson is a big, thick Safety. He’s 5-11, 212. I think he should definitely push for a roster spot next year.

Burley was a UDFA that spent time with the Jags. He lacks ideal size at 5-10, 185, but is a very good athlete. Burley started 33 games at Delaware. The Eagles generally prefer bigger corners, but obviously like something about Burley. They must see him as a player worth developing. He was just added 2 weeks ago.

Per Adam Caplan, the Eagles released Burley from the PS today. PE.com hasn’t made that official yet, but Caplan is a great source for moves like this.

Jordan Poyer Claimed

The Eagles released CB Jordan Poyer last week so they could add a RB. The team hoped to add Poyer back to the roster or to the practice squad. Unfortunately, the Browns added him.

Poyer was a 7th round pick. He is a S/CB tweener that lacks athletic ability, but is smart, instinctive and tough.

Some Big Red Fun

It is great to see Andy Reid doing well in KC…BUT…I hate the way he looks in red. Just doesn’t look right. More than a few people agree. One of the running gags online is that he looks like the Kool Aid Man.

With that in mind, someone put together a great gif.

You’ll love this.

Eagles and Boys as Twins?

The AP preview for the Eagles-Cowboys game has an interesting start.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys couldn’t be more similar.

Both teams are 3-3 and tied for first place in the NFC East entering Sunday’s game at the Linc. Both teams are 2-0 in the division. Both teams are 0-3 against the AFC West, losing to Denver, Kansas City and San Diego.

There’s more.

Their passing offenses are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively. Their scoring averages are in the top five. Their defenses are 30th and 32nd overall. They each have 45 penalties and are their turnover margins are plus-4 and plus-2.

Something has to give this weekend.

It really is interesting how similar the teams are this year. Of course, the odd part is that the Eagles are coming off a 4-12 season and made lots of changes. Dallas was hoping to be a playoff team this year.

Some Love for Chip Kelly

Kelly’s critics don’t like to hear this, but he is having an impact on the NFL. Can we please retire the Spurrier comparisons now?

Eagles Do Make a RB Move

Here ya go.

I’m sure Poyer will be added to the practice squad when he clears waivers. I suppose he could be claimed, but don’t anticipate that. Poyer hasn’t shown anything special in his limited time. He’s a young guy the Eagles hope can be a good role player in the future.

Tucker gives the Eagles depth. Going into a game with just 2 RBs is dangerous. If one gets hurt, you’re stuck with just one RB. That’s not good for a coach like Kelly who runs the ball a lot and runs an up-tempo attack.

Polk Out

It will be interesting to see if the Eagles make a roster move to add a 3rd RB or if they decide going with 2 is okay. Could James Casey or Damaris Johnson fill in there in an emergency situation?

Eagles Winning the Right Games

The Eagles are also 2-0 in the division. Last year they were 1-5.
