Mike Catapano Update

Call him “Mr. Pancakes”.  Mike is the draft prospect that went for breakfast with the Eagles assistant coach after his Pro Day.

Gil Brandt has an update on things.  Per Brandt, Catapano had a private workout with the Eagles.  Also worth noting, the 6-3, 271 Catapano was worked out as a LB by the Eagles.  4-3 teams see him as a DE.

Here are the results of the Pro Day:

“At his pro day, Catapano (6-foot-3 7/8, 271 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds on each attempt. He had a 37 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-8 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.31 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.09 seconds. Catapano threw the bar up 33 times on the bench press (225 pounds).”

I think of Catapano as a 5th round type of target.  Brandt says he could go as early as the 4th round.

Jimmy Bama’s Jerseys Guide

Eagles fans love buying and wearing Eagles jerseys.  But which one do you buy?  Those things can cost a pretty penny.  Jimmy Bama, the saintliest of Eagles fans, has decided to offer some advice on buying jerseys.  Mother Teresa herself could have benefited from advice like this.

My personal favorite:

42 Kurt Coleman – Bring a cardboard cutout of Nnamdi Asomugha with you, and make sure it’s always pointing at you, just in case anything goes wrong.”

Let Mr. Bama learn you good. Go read his greatness.

Eagles Looking for ILB Depth

Per this report, the Eagles had a scout at Iowa State’s Pro Day and his focus was their pair of star LBs, AJ Kein and Jake Knott.

Both players had terrific college careers.  Klein played in the Shrine Game.  Knott got hurt in the season and wasn’t able to play in an all star game.  Klein is 6-2, 246.  Knott is 6-2, 241.  No official results in yet from the Pro Day.

Knott is the player I like better.  He had 8 INTs and 10 FFs in his career.  Also had more solo tackles between the two of them.  Neither guy is a great run stuffer.  Both are best when kept clean and allowed to fly to the ball.  Klein is probably a 4th round type.  Not sure of Knott’s value.

Both guys would come in to challenge for backup roles at ILB.  Jamar Chaney and Casey Matthews aren’t sure things.  Jason Phillips was added, but more depth would be good.

Draft Watch – WR Marquise Goodwin

The Eagles last drafted a player from Texas in 1998.  That’s right, not once in the Reid era did the team draft a Longhors player.  Could that change in 2013?

Per this report, the Eagles showed serious interest in WR Marquise Goodwin at the Texas Pro Day.  Goodwin is an Olympic track star and has explosive speed.  He never posted great numbers at Texas, but didn’t get great QB play either.  Goodwin was very impressive at the Senior Bowl.  He showed the ability to get open deep, but also underneath.

Goodwin is a project, but a very talented player who could be a playmaker in the NFL.  He’s the kind of small, RAC weapon that Kelly liked at Oregon.  Get him the ball on a WR screen and let him do his thing.

Turnover Study

Brent over at Eagles Rewind did an interesting study on the Eagles and turnovers.  Last year’s team turned the ball over at a historical rate.  If we can simply cut back on turnovers, the Eagles will be better.

Brent crunches the numbers to talk about how much better.  Good stuff, especially for those who love data and statistical analysis.

Who Wants Pancakes?

Eagles draft prospects, that’s who.

Princeton DE Mike Catapano’s Pro Day info:

6-3, 271
33 reps
4.75 in the 40
37.5 in the VJ
7.03 time in the 3-cone

That is a great workout for him.  It shows speed, quickness, agility, strength, and explosion.  I’m now curious if they see him as a LB or DE.

My favorite part of the story:

“The hard work of these seniors has not gone unnoticed. After the testing was completed, an assistant coach from the Philadelphia Eagles treated Catapano to breakfast at PJ’s Pancake House to discuss his future. “

If we’re willing to invest pancake money in a prospect, that shows serious interest.  French toast would have made him a sure-fire 1st rounder.

Domo on DeSean, 4th Downs, and More

Paul Domowitch’s new column is out.  As always, he covers a variety of topics and offers good opinions.

He debunks the idea that DeSean Jackson will be used like De’Anthony Thomas (Oregon star RB/WR).  Domo breaks down Chip Kelly and going for it on 4th down.

Does he think Philly has a chance to host a Super Bowl?

Eagles Draft Grade From 2000-07

Chase Stuart of Football Perspective wrote a piece that evaluated drafts from 2000 to 2007.  Stuart’s formula had the Eagles ranked as the #10 team in the NFL.  The Eagles were #1 in 2002.  They were 4th in 2005.  Other years weren’t so great.

The 2 best teams…the Chargers and Colts.  The worst teams…the Raiders and Lions.

The best season was Dallas in 2005.  They drafted DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Jay Ratliff, Chris Canty, Kevin Burnett, and Marion Barber.  That’s a kinda decent draft class.  Eagles fans should be very  happy that Bill Parcells didn’t stay in Dallas.

Draft Watch – FS Phillip Thomas

The Eagles have a workout set up with Fresno State star Phillip Thomas.  He led the nation in INTs with 8.  He also had 4 FFs.  Those are big time numbers at a position where playmakers are coveted.  Thomas had 13 career picks.  He has great hands and good ball skills.

Thomas played at the Senior Bowl and worked out at the Combine.  The fact the Eagles want another workout does show serious interest.  Thomas would be a target in the 3rd or 4th round.
