Draft Watch – Big CB

Tony Pauline reported that the Eagles will workout Georgia CB Sanders Commings.

Commings info:

6-0, 216
4.41 in the 40
34.5 VJ
7.10 3-cone

Went to Senior Bowl, Combine

3 INTs in 2012…8 for career
Has size, toughness to play CB or S

The Eagles have shown an interest in big, physical CBs.  Commings certainly fits the bill.

Benn Gets 1-Year Extension

Newly acquired WR Arrelious Benn signed a 1-year contract extension today.  In theory, this will keep him with the Eagles for a couple of years.

While this is hardly a significant move, it does show that the Eagles like Benn and have hopes for him beyond the “let’s see what this kid can do” range.  Benn is a good fit here because of his run blocking, RAC ability, STs coverage, and KOR ability.  He could prove to be a solid role player.

The Eagles and High School Stars

Jimmy Bama came up with this interesting nugget

“Rivals began publishing Top 100 H.S. recruit lists in ’02. 3 of the #1 overall recruits in the nation are/were Eagles. Who are they?”

Make your guess

Any second thoughts?

The answer is:

Bryce Brown, Vince Young and Ernie Sims

I made that small intentionally.  Didn’t want you to peak and easily get the answer.

Big Boy Football

From Les Bowen:

“We want taller, longer people, because bigger people beat up little people.” — Chip

I know this is music to the ears of many fans.

Great Look at Benn

Chase Stuart from Football Perspective wrote a great piece on Arrelious Benn.  He went back to Benn’s days at Illinois and showed his development and then how it stalled, partially due to circumstances.

The potential is still there.  Is it too late for Benn to turn into the player so many expected?

Competition for Jon Dorenbos

The Eagles re-signed LS Jon Dorenbos to a 4-year deal, but do need to bring someone to camp to challenge him.

According to this article, an Eagles scout was closely checking out Nebraska LS P.J. Mangieri at the Cornhuskers Pro Day.  I can offer no insight on snappers.  He did work with current Eagles kicker Alex Henery for parts of 2 seasons.

RB Marcus Lattimore Update

Recently South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore tweeted about eating a cheesesteak while in Philly.  We wondered if he was there to visit the Eagles or for some other reason.

Per this article, Lattimore was indeed visiting the Eagles.  You may wonder why the team would be investigating a RB with such good depth already there.  This is the Eagles doing their due diligence.  If Lattimore falls far enough, he is too good a value to pass up.  What is that point?  How is his leg recovering?  How do you value him?

If he does recover, Lattimore can be a good starting NFL runner. He’s not dynamic.  The question is how much athleticism he retains, to go along with his size and power.

The Maclin Trade Rumor – Update

There was recent speculation about Jeremy Maclin being a trade target of the Colts.  Owner Jim Irsay talked about the team trying to land a “whopper” and then let it be known the deal was for a WR.

Les  Bowen reported on Twitter that he checked with some people and couldn’t find anything to substantiate the story.

Now Jason La Canfora is jumping in to say that after doing some digging of his own, the best possibilities for who Irsay was talking about…Maclin or DeSean Jackson.

Now you have to read this carefully.  La Canfora didn’t get anyone to say the Eagles were looking to move a WR.  He simply eliminated most of the other possibilities and then came to the conclusion that the most likely answer was Mac or DJax.  He was actually told it wasn’t Jackson, but said he wasn’t going to close the door on that scenario.

Even if the Colts are targeting Maclin and even if they have talked to Howie about a deal, that doesn’t mean this is going to happen.  And I do think it is key that this situation feels more like one where the Colts are looking for a WR rather than the Eagles shopping one.  Indy GM Ryan Grigson was in Philly when Maclin was drafted so it would make sense to have interest.  As a sidenote, I’ve always thought Colts WR Reggie Wayne is someone that Maclin compared favorably to.

We’ll see if this story has legs or is just more speculation about speculation.
