Eagles Live Updates

From Greg Cosell:

* Doesn’t feel Geno Smith is a good fit for Chip Kelly’s offense.  Also doesn’t feel that he’s worth the #4 overall pick.  Did stress that’s just his opinion.  Said if Kelly feels Smith is a good fit and value, Eagles should take him.

From Brian Baldinger:

* Doesn’t think Nick Foles is the QB of the future and said that he doesn’t think Nick fits in Kelly’s offense.  Thinks the Eagles need to trade Foles.

* Baldy thinks pick #4 is a no-brainer…OLB Jarvis Jones.  Said “My mom could scout him.”  Said Jones is the best defensive player in the draft.  Oh boy, Captain Hyperbole strikes again.  Later did mention that doctors do need to okay Jones before he can be picked.

From Dave Spadaro:

* Said a couple of times that the Eagles are a player away from having a very good, if not dominant OL.  Doesn’t sound like much, but there was something about the way Dave said it.  Felt like more than just an observation or random comment.  I wonder if this is a hint that the Eagles are leaning toward taking an OT at #4.

Bad D

From stats guru Russell Baxter:

“Most Total TD Allowed NFL 2012: Titans (55), Bills & Saints (53), Eagles (52), Raiders (50), Lions (49), Jaguars & Buccaneers (48)”

Boy, was the Eagles defense bad last year or what?  Excited to see what the guys can do this year.

More on the Benn Trade

Eagles Rewind is a sort of new blog that is worth checking out.  Brent does a lot of research and is real good with charts and stats.  Here he took a look at what the Eagles gave up for Benn and has interesting results

He’s got some draft thoughts as well.

Draft Nuggets

New WRs coach Bob Bicknell has been a busy man. He’s checked out several prospects at their Pro Days, most recently Marshall star Aaron Dobson.  The Senior WR is 6-3, 211 and a talented prospect.  Here’s more on his Pro Day.

Bicknell was also at Texas A&M’s Pro Day.  There he was checking out Ryan Swope.  We’ve talked about Chip Kelly liking two kinds of WRs:  big guys and smaller guys who have playmaking ability.  Swope is the latter.  He ran great at the Combine, but on tape doesn’t play to that speed.  He does show the ability to be a terrific slot receiver and playmaker.

The Eagles had someone at the Oklahoma State Pro Day. No word on if that was a position coach or simply an area scout.  You can get some info on the prospects here.

Jake Long to STL

Per PFT, Jake Long will sign with the Rams.  He had been in Miami talking to his former team about re-signing, but maybe the Rams upped their offer.

Long was the top OT available in FA.  His deal will help set the market for Sebastian Vollmer and Andre Smith.  I don’t anticipate the Eagles going for a RT at this point, but never say never.

New Podcast

Jimmy Bama and I recorded a show today on the Eagles and the first week of free agency.  We covered each player for a few minutes.  We talked about the team’s aggression and the type of players they signed.  Lasted about an hour.

We’ll talk more about each player in the future.  You could spend a good half-hour on some of the signings.  We also need to watch more tape to get a better feel for each of the guys.

Writers on the Front Seven

Tim McManus of Birds 24/7 posted an article on the defense and how everyone might be used.

Jeff McLane also shared his thoughts on the defense, especially the front seven.

We’re all playing a guessing game right now.  Interesting to see how everyone thinks this will work.

Misc Eagles Draft Items

* The Eagles have already had a workout with WR/RB/RS Tavon Austin. He’s not in play at pick #4, but should the team move back, he could definitely be a target.  Austin might be the ultimate Chip Kelly type of player.

* The Eagles were at the Arkansas State Pro Day.  No great prospects, but they do have a QB who could be a late round target.

* Eagles scouts were also at the Arizona State Pro Day.

* They also were at the Cal (PA) Pro Day.  The primary targets are FS Rontez Miles and C Eric Kush.

* Eagles scouts were at Lehigh’s Pro Day, likely to check out WR Ryan Spadola.

* Miami (OH) QB Zac Dysert says the Eagles are one of the 2 teams showing the most interest in him.  Could go as early as the 2nd round, or possibly in the 3rd-4th range. Real interesting player.

Prospect Watch

Maryland TE Matt Furstenburg said he’s talked to the Eagles.

Really good athlete.  6-3, 242. Ran 4.62 at the Combine and had a vertical jump of 35.5 inches.  For his career, Matt was 60-769-5.  Those are pedestrian numbers, but Matt suffered through mediocre QB play.  Late round pick, but definitely has NFL potential.
