RJF Update

Ian Rapoport on Twitter:

“#49ers DT Ricky Jean-Francois will take visits before making a choice, per source. Teams interested: #Eagles, #Colts, #Saints, #Titans”

I kinda hope we sign this guy. I like the sound of RJF. Typing MJG and DRC over the years has grown on me I guess. Just would hope RJF plays better.

Jake Long?

Rotoworld caught Adam Schefter on SportsCenter and got these comments in regard to OT Jake Long:

“As it turns out, he is going to be very sought after in this market,” reported Schefter. Schefter named the Bears, Eagles, Rams, and Dolphins as clubs that all have interest in Long. Long has been said to be seeking $11 million annually or perhaps more. We’d expect $9 million to be a more realistic target.

The Eagles?  I feel like this is a major stretch.  Schefter has listed the Eagles with FA targets in previous years that the team had no interest in whatsoever.  He gets info from agents and they often throw the Eagles name in the list.  That makes it sound like more competition for their clients.

Why the Eagles?  The team has proven to spend big over the last 15 years. Also, they normally have the cap room to make any move they want.

Could this rumor be true?  Doesn’t seem likely to me.  I think a team will pay Long big bucks to come play LT for them.  The Eagles would put him at RT.  I just don’t see the Eagles investing mega-bucks there when the draft has so many good OT prospects.

Then again, the Eagles do know the value of good OTs, especially after watching Demetress Bell and King Dunlap in 2012.  Interesting rumor. Just don’t know if it is accurate.

Quintin Mikell Interview

Tim McManus of Birds 24/7 caught up with Quintin Mikell to get his thoughts on being a free agent and whether he’d like to return to the Eagles

Mikell had a high cap figure, which led to his release. He is still an effective starter, maybe better than that if you listen to him.

“The Rams are in a rebuilding phase,” Mikell explained. “I had a pretty good year I feel, stats wise and game play. There are things that I don’t get credit for like taking on blocks, helping others make plays. I create a lot of good situations for the team.”

I doubt the Eagles are interested, but never say never.  If the team landed a FS in free agency and wanted a stop-gap player at SS, maybe Q could get a call.

Players Being Released

Free agency means lots of activity, but not all is good. A fair amount of veteran players will be released.  We’ve seen some interesting names in just the last 24 hours.  Here is a good list of released players as of about an hour ago

I don’t see many Eagles targets, but if the team should miss out on a key target in free agency, they could look to these guys as backup targets.

Roob: Eagles Interested in Goldson, Landry

Reuben Frank reports that the Eagles are interested in veteran Safeties Dashon Goldson and LaRon Landry.

“The Eagles are in the market for a veteran free agent safety, and they have strong interest in two of the top safeties on the market — 2012 Pro Bowlers LaRon Landry and Dashon Goldson, according to various league sources.”

I consider this good news.  Goldson is the top FS on the market.  Landry is arguably the top SS.  This shows that the Eagles know they need help at both spots.  Clearly the Eagles aren’t signing both guys.  They’ll make a run at one and then it would make sense to add a Safety in the draft.

I’m particularly fascinated by Landry.  He can be a solid pass defender and an impact run defender.  He is 230 pounds and extremely gifted.  He’s never fully played up to his potential, but still would offer a big boost to the secondary.  Landry had 4 FFs in 2012.  That tells you he can separate the ball from the runner/receiver.

Goldson will cost more due to the fact he’s coming off 2 good seasons.  Landry had some injury issues in 2010 and 2011.

Landry also makes a lot of sense for Bill Davis.  He got to work with Adrian Wilson in Arizona, another huge Safety that can play the run and be a physical presence in the box.  Landry is faster and covers better, but lacks Wilson’s consistency.  Davis would know how to use a big DB like Landry to get the most out of him.

Greg Toler

UPDATE:  Apparently word of Toler’s re-signing was premature. He will in fact hit the market on Tuesday to see what is out there.

Arizona CB Greg Toler has re-signed with the Cardinals. He was a player the Eagles could have had potential interest in due to his history with Bill Davis.  There were no hot rumors of Toler and the Eagles, but the speculation did make some sense.  One less target.

Another Sean Smith Hint

From writer Jeff Darlington:

“I ran into @NFL agent @davidcanter earlier. He’s working the phones on CB Sean Smith’s behalf. Keep eyes on San Fran, KC and Philadelphia.”

You wonder if the Eagles are targeting Smith as their top CB or if he’s 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.  He’s got to be up there.  He’s not a break-the-bank target, but is good.

Interest in Desmond Bryant?

This would be an interesting move.

Talented, versatile DL. And he went to Harvard. How’s that for odd.

Dorenbos, C. Anderson Re-sign

The Eagles re-signed LS Jon Dorenbos to a 4-year deal.  Jon is a good snapper and STer.  He also is good in the locker room and a genuinely funny guy who has a future in TV when football is done.  Sadly, he may have a problem as a liar. I’m pretty sure his wife Julie should be married to a QB and not LS.  Jon’s got to be telling her some kind of crazy story.  “Baby, I am a QB. Vick just kisses the coach’s butt. I’ll get in there next week and you’ll see.  I’m a star QB ready to take over the NFL!!!”

RFA Colt Anderson signed his 1-year deal.  Great STer and solid backup Safety.

Smart moves by the Eagles.
